Music Instruction

Testimonials

John has both patience and enthusiasm and is excellent at helping kids cultivate a love for playing music. Both my youngest child and my teen have really enjoyed his lessons and have learned a lot very quickly!

John is a fun, funny, and encouraging teacher.  He is patient, even when my son is toying around on the keys not focused on the work at hand :) he keeps it light and positive, while also challenging.

- Emmet Y. (10 year-old student)

Thanks for visiting my music teaching page!

You can see from my website that I love playing music. I also deeply love working with others to help develop their musical skills. If you're a prospective music student, by seeking a teacher you're taking an important step forward!

The first lesson with me is always free.

My rates for 30, 45, and 60 minute, one-on-one lessons are very reasonable, intended to be sustainable, and I will travel to you for a small additional charge.

Please email me for more information at phatoliver@proton.me.

Method

Instruments taught:

  • Piano, Guitar (acoustic and electric), Electric Bass Guitar, and beginning flute and brass instruments.

I have been a teacher of many things, including: sailing, math, and human anatomy; but music is the best. I have been a professional music teacher for over 6 years. I work primarily with youth ages 7 to 17, but also keenly enjoy working with adult learners.

My teaching style is focused but adaptive, balancing between “formalized” methods and meeting the immediate musical moment. Learning proper technique on a musical instrument is essential, particularly at the beginning, but lessons can become much richer by connecting to real musical energy.

All of my lessons are anchored by written musical material, such as the piano learning series by Faber, or written transcriptions of hit songs for guitar, to name but two. I also regularly include exercises in ear training, improvisation, and music theory. For the young learner, taking time to listen to recorded music, with parental guidance, is also an essential part of learning an instrument.
